A man has died after a crash between a motorbike and a van on an Aberdeenshire road.

The collision took place a mile away from the Campfield service station on the A980 near Glasel, Banchory, at 2.45pm on Tuesday.

Emergency services rushed to the scene as the van and motorbike both went up in flames.

Police later confirmed that the male biker had died.

A Police Scotland spokesman said: "I can confirm one person has sadly died as a result of the collision.

Two people who were travelling in the van were unhurt.

The A980 was closed from the Raemoir House Hotel to Torphins for eight hours to allow police to examine the scene.

The road will remain closed until Friday to allow repairs to the road surface. Diversions are in place.

Sergeant Stephen Milne of the Aberdeen road policing unit added: "This was a very tragic incident and we are still piecing together exactly what happened. I would appeal for anyone who saw the collision who have not yet spoken to us to contact us with any information that they may have."
