Two teenage boys have been charged in connection with a huge blaze at Scotland's first sanatorium.

Glen O'Dee Hospital in Banchory, Aberdeenshire, was destroyed by the fire, which broke out shortly before midnight on Thursday.

A total of 62 firefighters battled the blaze overnight but were unable to save the building.

Police confirmed on Monday two 13-year-old boys had been charged for wilful fire-raising and would be reported to the Youth Justice Management Unit.

Detective sergeant George Nixon said: "We would like to thank members of the Banchory community for their support and assistance throughout this inquiry.

"While no one was injured a significant amount of damage has been caused and the consequences could have been far greater."

Glen O'Dee was built to treat tuberculosis and welcomed its first patients in 1900.

It closed in 1998 and Forbes Homes, which bought Glen O'Dee in 2007, tabled plans earlier this year to demolish part of the hospital and build houses and flats.
