Tributes have been paid to the 12-year-old who died after falling from a tree during the school holidays.

Lachlan MacKenzie, from Aberdeenshire, fell from a tree while visiting family in Troon, South Ayrshire, on Thursday afternoon.

Emergency services were called to the Fullarton estate at around 3.20pm but were unable to save the youngster, who died at the scene.

Lachlan, from Muir of Fowlis, played with Donside Juvenile Football Club.

In a post on Facebook on Saturday, the club said: "Lachlan MacKenzie, a player with our 2004 squad sadly passed away suddenly.

"Lachlan's family have told us that Donside was Lachlan's greatest love in life where he made some amazing friends. We as a club are extremely proud that Lachlan chose to play for Donside.

"Lachlan was a great lad who was always smiling and he was a fantastic keeper for the 2004's. He will be sadly missed by all that knew him."

Alford Academy head teacher Moira Milne had earlier paid tribute to the first year pupil.

She said: "Lachlan had settled into his first year at Alford Academy very well and this will come as a huge shock to the school and wider community.

"Our thoughts are with his family and friends at this difficult time."

Police said a report will be sent to the procurator fiscal.
