An underground explosion has forced a street to be cordoned off.

Emergency services were called to Greenmarket in Dundee shortly before 8.30am on Thursday.

Crews tackled the fire in a subsurface cable pit, which has caused a power cut, affecting dozens of businesses.

Smoke could also be seen in the area.

A Police Scotland spokesman said: "Police Scotland and our colleagues at Scottish Fire And Rescue Service attended in Greenmarket, Dundee, after a report of a loud noise and smoke coming from a drain.

"This has been been confirmed as an electrical fault, which has affected neighbouring properties.

"SSE are currently dealing with this, however there may be considerable disruption in the area for some time while the problem is investigated and dealt with."

A Scottish Fire and Rescue Service spokeswoman added: "We sent one appliance to the scene.

"It was a small fire in a subsurface cable pit."
