Scotland's rugby squad have recorded a stirring new version of Highland Cathedral to raise cash for charity.

The recording features captain Kelly Brown on lead vocals, as well as team-mates Euan Murray, Henry Pyrgos and Matt Scott.

New lyrics have been composed to go with the famous tune, with the combination getting its first airing at Murrayfield on Saturday ahead of the RBS 6 nations clash with Italy.

The words, which celebrate "Scotland my country and my land of birth" as well as "Highland Cathedral in my heart, my home", were written by Scottish rugby fans Simon Paterson-Brown and Chris Thomson.

Those behind the project hope the song will make it into the charts, raising funds in the process for three charities - The Bill McLaren Foundation, Hearts and Balls and The Murrayfield Centenary Fund.

Brown said: "It's been good fun, singing's something I enjoy. Normally the only chance I get to sing is on the team bus, so I was more than happy to help.

"It's a song for the supporters and I just hope that they like it. It has been a massive privilege to record this piece of music and give it its first airing at our first home RBS 6 Nations match this year.

"It would be brilliant if our fans helped support the tune not only in the charts but as it's also raising money for three fantastic rugby charities."

Mr Paterson-Brown said: "The track is a wonderful new vocal version of a superb tune that encompasses all that is best about Scotland and her people."

The song, which also features pupils from 15 schools across Aberdeenshire, is produced by Calum Malcolm, who has worked with a number of Scottish bands including Wet Wet Wet and Simple Minds and is being released by Edinburgh-based record label The Music Kitchen.

The schools involved in the project were Burnhaven, Bervie, Mill O' Forest, Newtonhill, Danestone, Glashieburn, Airyhall, St Joseph's, Torphins, Strichen School, Whitehills, combined (Crimond/Rathen/ St Combs), Meldrum Primary, Kingsford Primary and Heatheryburn.
