Wintry conditions have again hit parts of Grampian closing roads and causing problems for commuters.

Grampian Police said it had been called to more than ten accidents on Thursday morning.

The B976 is affected by high winds and snow, the B974 Banchory-Fettercairn is closed due to ice and the snow gates are closed on the Glenshee-Braemar road.

Between Pitcaple and Chapel of Garioch the unclassified road is closed due to icy conditions and police have advised motorists to take extra care Chapel of Garioch area.

Near Pitmedden one car, a silver Vauxhall Astra, ended up on its side. The driver was uninjured.

On the B9001 Gariochford-Bogniebrae road a car came off the road after sliding. Police said the driver did not appear to be injured.

A police spokesman said: “Snow which has fallen in some areas, accompanied by low temperatures, may cause hazardous driving conditions on some routes.”

Traffic Scotland has warned of icy conditions on all of Grampian’s roads.

A spokesman said: “Further hail, sleet and snow showers are expected with slight deposits of snow near sea level, but perhaps a fresh 2-5cm of snow over some inland and upland areas. Where showers have left surfaces wet or with slushy snow, ice will readily form, especially on untreated surfaces.

“The public should be aware of this ice risk on roads and pavements.”

In Aberdeenshire three schools were forced to make changes to pupil transport with some buses cancelled.

Ski centres in the area are reporting good conditions with temperatures sitting at around -3C on Deeside. At Glenshee 19 of the centre’s 22 lifts are open.

A spokesman at Glenshee Ski Centre said: “There is good snow cover over the entire ski area. Most slopes are loaded with snow allowing for skiing and boarding over the entire hill.

“All runs have groomed fresh snow on a hard packed frozen base. High traffic areas and exposed ridges are icy.”

At the Lecht all the main runs are complete with a good cover of new snow on a firm base. Around 12 runs are expected to open.
