As voters in Scotland reacted in shock to the news that the UK had voted to leave the EU, others across the country remained decidedly confused as to what had just happened.

Only hours after the certainty of a Brexit was assured - the Leave campaign eventually sealing a 52% to 48% victory - 'What is the EU?' became the UK's second most popular Google search.

Google Trends data shone a light into the somewhat bamboozled minds of voters, with UK search histories indicating more than a handful of people embarked on a journey of retrospective research.

At around 12.30pm, the most common Google search was 'What does it mean to leave the EU?', suggesting the reality of the situation was beginning to set in, if a little too late.

'What is the EU?' was the second most popular search, while 'Which countries are in the EU?' came in third.

The prospect of a Brexit was clearly lying heavy on the mind for those with keyboards at their disposal, with 'What will happen now we've left the EU?' taking the fourth spot, while 'How many countries are in the EU?' was the fifth most popular search.

Better late than never to get your political thinking cap on.
