A Jewish Labour MP has walked out of a press conference staged by Jeremy Corbyn after being accused of colluding with the right-wing press.

A clearly upset Ruth Smeeth had been at the launch of a report into anti-Semitism in the party when it was claimed she was colluding with The Daily Telegraph by one of Corbyn's grassroots supporters.

The row overshadowed the launch, which was sparked by former London mayor Ken Livingstone's controversial comments about Zionism.

Corbyn also courted controversy by appearing to compare Israel to Islamic State during the speech.

The review, carried out by Shami Chakrabarti, found the Labour Party "is not overrun by anti-Semitism, Islamophobia or other forms of racism".

But Labour members should "resist the use of Hitler, Nazi and Holocaust metaphors", it says.

Corbyn, who is under intense pressure to fall on his sword, refused to answer questions about his leadership.

In his speech he said: "Under my leadership, the Labour Party will not allow hateful language or debate in person, online or anywhere else.

"We will aim to set the gold standard not just for anti-racism but for a genuinely welcoming environment for all communities and for the right to disagree as well."

The Labour leader added: "To assume that a Jewish friend or fellow member is wealthy, some kind of financial or media conspiracy, or takes a particular position on politics in general or on Israel and on Palestine in particular, is just wrong.

"Our Jewish friends are no more responsible for the actions of Israel or the Netanyahu government than our Muslim friends are for those various self-styled Islamic States or organisations."

Corbyn later denied he had been comparing the state of Israel to the terrorist group ISIS.

But the leader of the Israeli Labor party Isaac Herzog condemned Corbyn for his comments, saying: "The comparison is shocking, unacceptable and a betrayal of the values that the Labor movement represents around the world."

Herzog added: "Corbyn represents a position of consistent hatred of Israel."
