English MP Dave Anderson is Labour's new shadow Scottish secretary, it has been revealed.

The MP for Blaydon, in north east England, assumes the role after Edinburgh MP Ian Murray resigned over the leadership of Jeremy Corbyn.

Following the appointment, Mr Anderson, who will also take on the role of shadow Northern Ireland Secretary, tweeted he was "happy to take up this position".

He also said he was looking forward to working with colleagues in Scotland.

A spokesperson for Scottish Labour leader Kezia Dugdale said: "Kezia looks forward to welcoming Dave to Scotland soon and discussing the challenges ahead."

A former miner, Mr Anderson has represented Blaydon since 2005.

An SNP spokesman said: "At a time when the Tories have taken the country and the economy to the edge of a cliff with Brexit, it is beyond belief that Scotland's only Labour MP would rather spend his time attacking Jeremy Corbyn than do his job representing the people of Scotland - leaving the farcical situation where a Labour MP representing a constituency in England is having to double up as the shadow secretary of State for nearly every country apart from the one he was actually elected to represent."
