David Cameron has been accused of "cronyism" by Labour after an apparent leak of his resignation honours list.

The former Prime Minister was accused by opposition MPs of rewarding personal aides, political donors and senior figures on the losing Remain campaign from the EU Referendum vote.

Criticism has arisen amid reports in the Sunday Times Mr Cameron recommended knighthoods for Philip Hammond, Michael Fallon, Patrick McLoughlin, and David Lidington - all pro-EU cabinet colleagues.

According to the Sunday Times, former Chancellor George Osborne was recommended for a companion of honour award.

Labour deputy leader Tom Watson branded the honours list "cronyism".

Also among the awards were reported to be Will Straw, head of the failed official pro-Remain campaign, who was proposed for a CBE.

More than 20 Downing Street staff were reportedly recommended for awards too.

Mr Watson said the list represented the worst of the "old boy's network".

Labour leadership challenger Owen Smith called for a total revamp of the system in light of the controversy.

"I'm disappointed that the former prime minister should use the system to slap his friends on the back," Mr Smith said.

Outgoing Ukip leader Nigel Farage tweeted: "David Cameron's resignation honours list shows that it's a good job he's gone. Too many rewards for failure".
