The latest annual figures for MSPs' expenses have been released by the Scottish Parliament.

They reveal parliamentarians at Holyrood claimed nearly £12.8m on expenses in 2015-16, up by around £270,000 on the previous year.

The Scottish Parliament says after "election-related winding up costs" are taken into account, the increase is "in line with inflation".

Winding up costs relate to expenses claimed by MSPs for their parliamentary office if they decide to retire - as 15 MSPs chose to do in the run-up to May's Holyrood elections.

MSPs from the Highlands and Islands tend to incur higher expenses because of the remote nature of their constituencies or regions.
