Nigel Farage would do a "great job" as the British ambassador to the United States, Donald Trump has said.

The president-elect made the comments on his official Twitter feed last night.

The Ukip leader was the first British political figure to visit Trump after his surprise election victory on November 8.

He took a trip to Trump Tower in New York with several friends including Ukip donor Arron Banks.

Trump tweeted: "Many people would like to see @Nigel_Farage represent Great Britain as their Ambassador to the United States. He would do a great job!"

A former aide to Farage, Raheem Kassam, said he was "flattered" by the tweet.

Kassam also accompanied Farage to Trump Tower earlier this month.

Trump said: "I just spoke to @Nigel--Farage (yes I woke him up) about the @realDonaldTrump tweet.

"Safe to say he was enormously flattered."

The anti-EU politican campaigned for Trump during the election.

In August, Farage addressed a pro-Trump rally in Jackson, Mississippi. Trump introduced Farage to the crowd as "Mr Brexit".

He told the crowd: "I could not possibly tell you how to vote in this election. But, you know, I get it. If I was an American citizen, I wouldn't vote for Hillary Clinton if you paid me.

"In fact, I wouldn't vote for Hillary Clinton if she paid me."

Trump told American voters before election day that his win would be like "Brexit plus".

Downing Street has responded to Trump's suggestion by saying there is no position for Farage to fill.

A spokesman said: "There is no vacancy. We have an excellent ambassador to the US."
