Weather warnings issued for widespread ice and snow across Scotland

'Increasing risk of ice' with snow expected in Central and eastern areas throughout Wednesday.

Icy Roads: Motorists warned following rainfall.

The Met Office has issued further weather warnings covering all of Scotland throughout Tuesday night and Wednesday.

A cold northerly airflow following on from the band of snow that swept across the country will lead to an "increasing risk of ice" at higher levels initially but spreading to lower levels before Wednesday's rush hour.

In south-west Scotland, Strathclyde, Lothian, Central, the Borders, Tayside, Fife, Grampian and the Highlands the weather group has warned that the public should take "extra care and be aware of the risk of ice on untreated surfaces".

A spokesman for the Met Office said: "Icy stretches are likely to form on untreated surfaces across Scotland and northern England during Tuesday night and early Wednesday morning, with upland areas most prone early in the period following snow and partial thaw.

"Further wintry showers in the overnight period are likely to increase the ice risk by dawn on Wednesday."

Yellow "be aware" warnings have also been issued for snow in Central, Tayside, Fife, Grampian, the Highlands, Orkney and Shetland between 7pm on Tuesday through to the end of Wednesday.

Warning of "possible disruption to travel", the spokesman added: "Snow showers, some heavy, will affect upland parts of Grampian and north Highland later on Tuesday evening.

"On ground above 250m fresh accumulations of two to five centimetres of snow are expected, possibly five to ten centimetres over higher parts, with severe drifting in the northerly gales.

"During Tuesday night and Wednesday further snow showers will affect the north and north-east, including low ground, some heavy. Further fresh falls of three to seven centimetres building up inland away from the immediate coast, with drifting. Some icy stretches will also develop."

On Tuesday, ferry services saw another day of disruption on Tuesday with routes to Coll and Tiree, Lewis and Mull cancelled and many more delayed. Services to Orkney and Shetland were also cancelled and delayed.

With the high winds abating ferry services look like returning to normal on Wednesday, with the exception of the Ardrossan to Brodick route.

A spokesman for Caledonian MacBrayne said: "The MV Caledonian Isles is now stormbound in Brodick, where she will remain berthed overnight. As a result of this the 7am sailing from Ardrossan on Wednesday has been cancelled. The first sailing, weather permitting, will be the 8.20am departure from Brodick."
