Weather warning as snow and icy conditions forecast for weekend
Widespread frost will hit with temperatures threatening to plummet to minus eight degrees.
Drivers should expect to face travel misery this weekend after snow and icy conditions were forecast.
The relatively mild weather of the past few weeks is predicted to give way to snow on higher grounds and even lower levels by next week.
STV weather presenter Seán Batty warned that the wintry conditions could be “disruptive” and told motorists to expect “tricky driving conditions”.
He said: “After the settled conditions over the last three weeks for many areas, most of the country will start to see spells of rain over the coming days and this will continue into next week.
“The weather is also set to turn colder, especially into next week. During the weekend, snow can be expected at times over higher ground; however, this will come down to increasingly lower levels into next week, with the possibility of disruptive snowfall in parts of the north and east especially over higher levels.
“After the recent quiet conditions, wintry weather will come as a shock and icy patches can be expected at times leading to tricky driving conditions. Drivers should be aware of the hazards and take caution on the roads.”
Temperatures are expected to fall to four or five degrees Celsius during the day and below freezing at night. Widespread frost will also hit and in the Highlands temperatures could plummet as low as minus eight degrees.
However, the snowfall could be good news for ski resorts ahead of the Easter weekend.
Seán added: “Following on from what has already been a good ski season for most of the resorts, the fresh snowfall will come as welcome news as we head towards the Easter break.”
