A teenager celebrated a teetotal challenge for charity by going out to get drunk and ended up sinking her teeth into a police officer and kicking his colleague.

Nicolle Williamson bit and kicked officers during a Hogmanay night out just hours before starting a "dry-athlon" to raise funds for a cancer charity.

The 19-year-old hotel worker spent New Year's Eve downing shots and wine in preparation for spending a month "on the wagon" in her friend's memory.

But Perth Sheriff Court heard her evening ended with her biting PC Evan Macdonald on the arm and kicking his colleague PC Louise Robertson on the legs at her home.

Williamson, from Comrie, Perthshire, admitted assaulting the two police officers at her home on 31 December last year.

Solicitor David Sinclair, defending, told Perth Sheriff Court: "She over-consumed alcohol on the night in question. She was clearly out of her depth.

"It was a relatively early start and her and her friend were drinking shots, consumed quickly, and also a bottle of wine. Given the night in question she was in the party spirit.

"She hasn't drunk since the incident. During January she has undertaken a sponsored event - a dry-athlon - not to take alcohol and to raise money for cancer research.

"She has resolved to abstain from alcohol to such excess in future. She has no history of offending and is in promising employment. It has had a salutary effect on her.

"She has been distressed and mortified at getting in such a state and she has abstained from alcohol. She undertook work in the community and set up a dry-athlon."

Sheriff Fiona Tait said: "This was an assault on police officers which involved biting one of them and repeatedly kicking the other. The court must take a serious view of assaults on officers. It is to your credit that you have taken the opportunity to show that you can be of good behaviour and you have maintained your employment."

She ordered Williamson to carry out 40 hours of community service.
