Primary pupils take part in sessions to encourage healthy lifestyle

NHS Tayside are highlighting the importance of working with the whole family to adopt healthier lifestyles with one in five children in Tayside classed as obese by the time they start primary school.

NHS Tayside: Health board is encouraging a healthy lifestyle in youngsters.

Pupils in Forfar are taking part in an NHS Tayside programme which highlights the importance of healthy eating, energy balance and a healthy lifestyle.

The Paediatric Overweight Service Tayside (POST) is currently delivering their Fun Fit Tayside programme to Primary 5 and 6 classes at Whitehills Primary School over an eight-week period.

The programme is delivered using a range of fun, interactive classroom activities by members of the NHS Tayside POST team and Angus Active Schools alongside the classroom teachers.

POST team lead Dr Laura Stewart said: “The POST team are really excited about getting into the classrooms in Whitehills and working directly with the kids to promote a healthy balanced lifestyle. The teaching staff have been really enthusiastic about this project and we hope that the kids and their parents will have fun and enjoy the sessions.

"The Fun Fit Tayside sessions focus on key health and wellbeing messages which are “It’s easy as one, two, three”, Be active for at least one hour a day, limit time spent in front of the TV or computer to no more than two hours per day and eat three healthy, balanced meals per day.

"The children are also told about the importance of energy balance, the different types of foods in the five main food groups and how to have healthy snacks in between meals. Among the activities for the pupils to take part in are physical activity and body mapping sessions."

POST is a specialist weight management service for children and young people across Tayside which aims to support children and young people between two and 15 years old, as well as their families, to manage their weight.

With one in five children in Tayside classed as obese by the time they start primary school, NHS Tayside recognises the importance of working with the whole family to help children and young people adopt healthier lifestyles.
