A major search is under way in South Ayrshire for an elderly man who has been missing for more than a day.

Graham Johnstone, 70, left his home in Whitehill Crescent, Annbank around 10.30am on Friday.

Mr Johnstone, who enjoys walking along local routes, was later reported missing by his family.

A rescue helicopter, a police dog unit and teams of volunteers have been searching walkways around Annbank and Auchincruive Estate.

He is around 5ft 8in tall, with a medium build and grey hair which is slightly balding. He is described as clean shaven and wears glasses.

Mr Johnstone was wearing a black zipped top, beige trousers and a fawn-coloured cardigan. Police said he may also be wearing a hat.

A man matching Mr Johnstone's description was seen by a couple around 11.45am on Friday at Oswald Bridge, though it is not known if this was the missing 70-year-old.

The man had similar clothing to Mr Johnstone's, was wearing walking boots and carrying what may have been an olive green coloured hat or balaclava.

Police said anyone who thinks they were the person who was spotted should contact them as they may need to rule out the sighting.

Mr Johnstone's family are said to be extremely concerned that he failed to return home.

Anyone with information on his whereabouts has been urged to contact Ayr Police Office on 101 as soon as possible.
