STV's city channels, STV Glasgow and STV Edinburgh, will move up the Freeview TV guide on Tuesday.

They will make the changeover from position 23 in the Freeview Electronic Programme Guide (EPG) to position eight, taking the place of BBC Alba as it moves to position seven following the transition of BBC Three to a fully online service.

It will be a landmark moment for the channels, which over the last two years have brought a mixture of news, sport, drama and daily magazine shows to audiences in and around Scotland's two largest cities.

The Edinburgh Festival 2015, an hour-long show broadcast live every weekday evening over the course of the internationally renowned festival, which reached 800,000 viewers in August last year, is among the highlights since the channels launched in 2014.

Glasgow Green Fireworks Live, broadcast from the city's grand annual fireworks display, and STV Fight Night, a live 90-minute boxing special featuring Commonwealth gold medallist Charlie Flynn and boxing talent Joe Ham, were also well received.

To mark the move, the channels will show STV's 1978 acclaimed adaptation of Muriel Spark's book The Prime of Miss Jean Brodie, in which Geraldine McEwan stars as the headstrong young teacher in a private school in 1930s Edinburgh. The seven part series will air on both channels from Thursday, April 7 at 9.05pm.

Director of channels at STV, Bobby Hain said: "With our city channels in a more prominent position, viewers from across Scotland will now find it easier to enjoy more of STV's trusted local news and magazine programmes along with our great mix of new and classic drama and entertainment."

Digital UK has indicated some viewers may need to retune their TV or box to receive the latest channel line up where changes are not picked up automatically.

STV Glasgow and STV Edinburgh are also available on Sky channel 117 and Virgin channel 159 in their broadcast areas.

The channels are also available to watch live or for catch-up on the STV Player across Scotland.
