A woman is seriously injured in hospital after a car mounted a pavement and ploughed into her during a hit-and-run.

The 41-year-old victim was walking with her adult son in Hillington, Renfrewshire, on Tuesday afternoon when she was knocked down.

A burgundy Vauxhall Astra with four people inside mounted the pavement and careered into the woman on Mossland Road, near to Atholl Avenue, at around 5.35pm before crashing into a road sign and fleeing the scene.

She was taken by ambulance to the Queen Elizabeth University Hospital where she remains for treatment. Hospital staff describe her condition as stable. Her son escaped injury.

Inspector Lorraine Lorimer, of the road policing department in Glasgow, said: "It would appear that the car, in which there were four people, lost control on Mossland Road, mounted the pavement, hit a road sign and then struck the woman.

"The occupants of the car made off leaving the car at the scene. At this time, officers are checking CCTV in the area to identify those responsible and would appeal for anyone who either witnessed the crash or who has any information that will assist officers with their enquiries to get in touch."

Witnesses are asked to contact officers at the Road Policing Department in Glasgow via 101 or Crimestoppers on 0800 555111.
