An 18-year-old woman has died after the car she and four others were travelling in left the road and plunged into a river.

The single-car crash happened on a small rural road near the village of Dalavich in Argyll and Bute at around 6.40pm on Tuesday.

The victim, later named as Amy Simpson, from Cowdenbeath, had been driving the Peugeot when it landed in the River Avich. Her four female passengers, aged between 17 and 19, managed to get to safety without serious injury.

Police Scotland said inquiries were continuing into the circumstances of the crash.

A spokeswoman said: "An 18-year-old girl has died following a road crash near Dalavich after the Peugeot car she was driving left the road and entered the River Avich.

"Four female passengers managed to get out of the car with no serious injuries and police inquiries are ongoing."
