Paige Doherty's mother paid a moving tribute to her "best friend" and "brightest star in the sky" as hundreds of mourners attended the schoolgirl's funeral.

The 15-year-old went missing in Clydebank, West Dunbartonshire, last month and a man has been charged with her murder.

There was standing-room only in St Margaret's Catholic Church in the town as about 600 friends and relatives crowded in for the service led by parish priest Canon Gerald Tartaglia. More locals lined the street outside the church.

Paige's mother Pamela Munro asked mourners to wear bright colours and arrived in a bright red dress.

Family floral tributes laid outside St Margaret's spelled out sister, niece, daughter and Paige, and included an angel, rainbow, star and pouting lips.

In her eulogy, Ms Munro asked mourners to "celebrate Paige's life, smile and think of a time she made you smile".

The schoolgirl's mother added: "Today will be the saddest and hardest day most of us will ever face but I want everyone to take two minutes to ask yourself: When did you see Paige sad? When did you see Paige upset, scared and alone?

"The answer will most likely be never and if you have it would be very few and far between.

"You see our daughter had a smile across her face every day and that is exactly how she should be remembered. There is no room for evil any more.

"There is no disputing Paige was taken from us in the most cruel way imaginable yet I take comfort in knowing Paige is in a safe and happy place where no one can hurt her again.

"A place where she is surrounded by family that have left us before and now safe in the arms of her Granny Doherty."

The order of service carried a message of thanks from the family and a pouting picture of Paige as well as an image of angel wings with the tribute "your wings were ready but our heart was not".

The teenager's white coffin was carried to church on Tuesday night in a white horse-drawn carriage pulled by grey horses wearing pink plumed headdresses.

Her mother's eulogy added: "Let's use today to celebrate Paige's life, smile and think of a time she made you smile. We all know how she brightened everyone's day; don't let that stop now just because she isn't here.

"Paige's infectious personality will always be here with us all so please don't cry, please don't worry and please don't let this determine your life forever.

"We all know that's not what Paige would want. Paige loves each and every one of you here today, cherish your memories with her and cherish her forever.

"Paige you are now the brightest star in the sky. I can say I loved you with all my heart as did the man who raised you."

Paige, who would have been 16 last Sunday, was reported missing after failing to turn up at her weekend hairdressing job on March 19.

Her body was recovered from bushes at the side of Great Western Road in Clydebank two days later.

John Leathem, 31, has appeared at Dumbarton Sheriff Court charged with murder.
