A man has been found dead after going on a fishing trip with his friends in Glasgow.

The body of Craig Allison, 22, was found on Sunday around 8.45am near the River Kelvin at Blairbuie Drive, Maryhill. The area is known locally as "the Slushie".

Police are treating the death as unexplained and a post-mortem is due to take place. A report will be sent to the procurator fiscal.

Detective inspector Jim Bradley of Maryhill CID said: "Craig's body was discovered by a member of the public on Sunday morning.

"We know that he had gone fishing on Saturday afternoon with friends who we have since spoken to.

"However, his friends left him there late Saturday night, early Sunday morning.

"At this time we do not know what happened to Craig and, until that is established, I would appeal to anyone who saw him in the area to get in touch."

He added: "Craig, who was white, had light brown hair and was wearing a grey T-shirt with a white collar and white trim on the sleeve, grey jogging bottoms and blue and white Adidas trainers.

"The area where he was found is quite a popular spot for fishing and the canal path is used by joggers, cyclists, dog walkers and the like, so if you recognise his description or have any information that will help our inquiry then please contact police."

Information can be given to officers at Maryhill CID via 101 or in confidence to the charity Crimestoppers on 0800 555111.
