An elderly couple have died after a head-on crash with a truck.

Henry McBeath, 80, and his wife Jessie, 78, died at the scene of the collision in Mossblown, South Ayrshire, on Tuesday afternoon.

The couple's Kia Venga was travelling west on the B743 road near to Mossblown at around 3pm when it was involved in a crash with a Renault LGV truck which was travelling east towards Mauchline.

Emergency services attended and the road was closed for several hours. Paramedics arrived but they died at the scene.

A police statement said: "They can be named as Henry McBeath and Jessie McBeath from Sorn in Ayrshire.

"The driver of the truck was uninjured but has been left badly shaken by the incident. The road was closed for several hours as crash scene investigators examined the scene.

"Sergeant Iain Pittams is appealing for anyone who may have witnessed the incident or who may have seen the Kia Venga car or Renault truck prior to the incident to contact them at Irvine Police Office on 101."
