Driving enthusiasts have been warned by police ahead of a car cruise event at the weekend.

More than 1000 car fanatics are expected to turn out at Irvine Beach Park in Ayrshire on Sunday for the event.

Police have issued a warning against speeding, wheel spinning and anti-social behaviour after some motorists were reported to prosecutors at the event last year but expect the overwhelming majority to enjoy the event without incident.

They said anyone involved in "speeding, wheel-spinning or creating a disturbance" could have their cars seized and face prosecution.

Those attending have also been asked by police to keep their vehicles on the road and use the designated car-parking areas.

Inspector Dean Pennington, head of Ayrshire's Road Policing Unit, said: "Sunday May 22 sees the Irvine Car Cruise return to the Irvine Beach park.

"Last year there were approximately 1000 cars at the event, competing for trophies for their cars. The overwhelming number of drivers behaved in a very responsible manner, but a small number were reported to the court for driving offences including driving on grassed areas.

"Police Scotland will have patrols, both with local officers and road policing patrols, and will enforce driving offences both at the event and on the roads leading to and from Irvine.

"I would ask that those attending the event drive in a safe manner and consider other road users and residents.

"If you are attending the event please enjoy it act responsibly and encourage others not to spoil it for the majority. Please take time to speak with officers at the event and share any local concerns."
