A man remains seriously injured in hospital after a digger crash which left one victim dead.

The digger was being towed by a tractor when it crashed into a car in Rutherglen, South Lanarkshire on Tuesday morning.

Five other cars and a bus were also involved in the incident. The driver of the car was pronounced dead at the scene in Fernhill Road shortly after 11am.

A man seriously injured in the smash, who was behind the wheel of the agricultural vehicle, was taken to Glasgow's Queen Elizabeth University Hospital where he remains in a serious condition.

Police Scotland said an "extensive recovery operation" was launched and have appealed for witnesses to come forward.

Sergeant Alison McAuley from the divisional road policing unit at Motherwell said: "An extensive recovery operation, which is expected to last for several more hours, is currently under way and Fernhill Road is closed with local diversions in place."

"I would appeal to anyone who witnessed what happened to contact officers at the divisional road policing unit based at Motherwell on 101."

A witness, who said he saw the aftermath of the incident, told STV News the excavator, which was on a low loader trailer, landed on top of a silver car in the street.

A member of the public, who arrived at the scene at around 11.15am, said a car had been "very badly crushed" after the plant vehicle fell off a low loader as it turned a corner in the area.

Five fire engines attended the crash, while they worked alongside police and ambulance personnel.

South Lanarkshire Council confirmed a "serious accident" had taken place.
