A man has been charged after a two-year-old was found unaccompanied on a street.

Police found the toddler on Albion Street in Motherwell, North Lanarkshire, at around 8.40pm on Sunday after receiving a report from a member of the public.

A 49-year-old man was later arrested and charged in connection with the incident.

He is expected to appear at Hamilton Sheriff Court on Tuesday.

A spokesman said: "Police attended the report of a young child wandering the streets in Albion Street, Motherwell.

"On their arrival they came across a two-year-old child who was not in the company of a suitable adult.

"The child was immediately taken into the care of police who liaised with the emergency social work department.

"Subsequent enquiries were carried out and a local 49-year-old man was arrested and charged in connection with an alleged offence contrary to the Children and Young Persons Act 2014.

"A report will be sent to the procurator fiscal."
