A man has died after a head-on crash between a BMW and a sports car at the weekend.

John Allan, 51, from Lanark, was driving his Opel GT on the A82 near Tarbert, Argyll, when it was involved in a collision with the BMW.

Emergency services were called to the scene at around 1.20pm on Sunday and Mr Allan was taken to the Queen Elizabeth University Hospital where he died a short time later.

His 51-year-old female passenger remains at the same hospital for treatment. Police have launched an investigation into the crash and appealed for any witnesses to come forward.

A Police Scotland spokesman said: "Mr Allan was taken by ambulance to the Queen Elizabeth University Hospital but died a short time after admission.

"His 51-year-old female passenger is currently being treated at the same hospital for minor injuries. Relatives are aware and a report will be submitted to the procurator fiscal.

"Sergeant Paul MacPherson at the Divisional Road Policing Unit at Dunoon would like to speak to anyone who witnessed the crash. He can be contacted via telephone number 101."
