A woman has been found dead after a major blaze ripped through a block of flats.

The 49-year-old's body was recovered by firefighters from a flat in the building in Paisley, Renfrewshire on Monday afternoon.

Emergency services were called to Fairway Avenue in the town at around 4.05pm. Fire crews extinguished the blaze then carried out a search of the building where they found the woman dead.

A full report will be sent to the procurator fiscal and police and the fire service have launched a joint investigation into the incident.

Detective sergeant Ian Ross, from Paisley Police Office, said: "Our inquiries are at an early stage to gather more information on this fire and a joint investigation will be carried out with the Scottish Fire and Rescue Service to establish the cause of the fire.

"At this time, I would ask anyone with information that may assist our investigation to contact Paisley Police Office through the 101 number."
