A takeaway driver was stabbed and then his car petrol bombed as it was being taken away for evidence.

The 29-year-old victim was sitting in his red Honda Jazz outside an Indian takeaway in Croftfoot, Glasgow, at around 6.50pm on Thursday when a man opened the door and attacked him.

He was taken by ambulance to hospital for treatment and needed surgery for a serious injury to his arm outside the Sultan takeaway in Castlemilk Road.

The suspect ran away and police arrived and launched an investigation.

Later that night, at about 10.55pm, the victim's car was being moved on to a removal lorry as part of the police probe when a man ran towards the vehicle and launched a petrol bomb.

The removal driver was not injured but the car was completely burnt out as a result.

The man who stabbed the takeaway driver is described as white, 6ft, of slim build, bald and was wearing a black T-shirt.

The man who threw the petrol bomb is described only as wearing dark clothes.

Tony Ahmed, 56, owner of the Sultan Indian Takeaway, said: "I wasn't there when he [the driver] had been stabbed but arrived afterwards just before the explosion.

"It was absolutely mental. We were inside working when we heard the explosion and there was such a lot of smoke that we had to close the shutters so we didn't breathe it in.

"You just don't expect anything like that to happen anywhere, let alone here. I've no idea who attacked him but look forward to hearing from him when he's out of hospital."

Officers say the stabbing was targeted and is linked to the fire attack.

Detective inspector Tom McKean, of Govan CID, said: "From our enquiries so far, we know that this was a targeted attack and that both incidents are linked.

"There was no attempt to rob the man in his car just to injure him and then to go after his car.

"The attack on the man happened mid-evening and in quite a busy area so I am sure someone will have seen it happen.

"The burning of the car was just before 11pm. Castlemilk Road is residential and I have no doubt that this attack on the car would have been witnessed.

"Thankfully, the driver of the removal vehicle was not injured but this must have been a terrifying experience for him. Officers are carrying our door to door enquiries and reviewing CCTV to trace those responsible."

Stewart Young, 58, a painter and decorator who lives opposite the takeaway, said: "When I went out I saw there was a car that had been set ablaze when it was going onto the ramp of a pickup truck to be taken away.

"I'd heard that when the guy stabbed him he asked the driver who he was. Then, when the driver said his name the guy stabbed him in the arm.

"I just hope the young guy is alright. I go in every now and then but I'm trying to watch my weight so avoid it. But any time of talked to the people there they've been lovely."

Additional officers are patrolling the area to provide public reassurance. Any information can be passed to officers at Govan CID via 101 or Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111 where details can be given in confidence.
