A pair of good Samaritans were punched and kicked to the ground in Glasgow city centre after trying to help harassed women.

Police say the victims, aged 30 and 34, were attacked by two other men who were being aggressive towards woman outside a nightclub on Albion Street in Merchant City.

The injured men, one of whom suffered a fractured ankle in the incident, saw a group of women being targeted when they left the venue on Sunday at 3.30am.

The attackers turned on the would-be rescuers before making off in a silver car.

Police are now appealing for members of the public to help catch the culprits, described as white with one wearing a white T-shirt and the other a black shirt

Detective sergeant Bernadette Walls, of Greater Glasgow CID said: "The two injured men had just come out of a nightclub in Albion Street and as they approached Bell Street they saw two men being aggressive to a group of women.

"They went over to try to help, however, the men turned on them and kicked and punched them to the ground before making off.

"At the time, neither of the men required hospital treatment despite both suffering some cuts and bruises, however, the next day the 30-year-old man had to go to hospital where it was found that he had a fractured ankle.

"We are currently checking CCTV in the area and so far enquiries have been progressing well, however, we are keen to speak to any of the women whose aid the men came to.

"They had left prior to police arriving so it is important that they come forward as their information can prove vital in catching the two men responsible for the attack."
