Fire crews tackled a large blaze at a derelict pub in north Glasgow.

The blaze broke out at the Broomfield Tavern, near the site of the old Red Road flats, around 8pm on Tuesday.

A fire service spokesman said a total of five engines had been called to the scene at Broomfield Road, Barmulloch.

A group of eight firefighters used breathing gear and three water jets to try and brings the flames under control, which also damaged a betting shop on the ground floor of the premises.

The fire sent a plume of smoke which was visible across north Glasgow, with a crowd gathering nearby.

Stephen Nesbit, watch manager at Scottish Fire and Rescue Service, said: "This was a significant and challenging fire and our crews have worked tirelessly in very difficult conditions.

"A total of nine pumps were on the incident ground at one point as we tackled the incident on a number of different fronts."

Glasgow City Council said Broomfield Road was  closed at its junction with Rye Road due to the fire before it reopened in the early hours of Wednesday.
