A man has been seriously injured after a "violent attack" in Glasgow city centre.

The 40-year-old was found around 2.45am on Saturday in West George Street.

He was taken to Glasgow Royal Infirmary and later transferred to Queen Elizabeth University Hospital, where staff say his condition remains serious.

Police are treating the attack as an attempted murder and are gathering CCTV footage for review.

Officers are appealing for anyone with any information to come forward.

Detective sergeant Phil Kennedy said: "It's clear from our initial enquiries that this man has been the victim of a serious assault.

"We are in the process of establishing the man's movements and trying to find out the exact circumstances of the attack.

"We will of course be reviewing CCTV footage collected from the various cameras in the city centre to gain additional information but I'm appealing to anyone who may have been in the area last night to contact us.

"Please pass on any information you may have, it could prove vital in our ongoing enquiries into this violent attack."

Police are asking anyone with information relating to the attack to call CID officers at city centre police office on 101.

Alternatively, Crimestoppers can be contacted anonymously on 0800 555 111.
