Kelvin Hall in Glasgow has reopened with the launch of a new state-of-the-art "super gym", eight-court sports hall, gymnastics hall and three dance studios.

The new Glasgow Club at Kelvin Hall is part of the first phase of a £35m redevelopment of the venue in a collaboration between Glasgow City Council, Glasgow Life, Glasgow and the National Library of Scotland.

The launch of the health and fitness facilities means a third of the building is now back into use.

The "super gym" is one of the largest of its kind anywhere in Scotland, with around £325,000 invested in more than 100 cardiovascular, strength-conditioning, and fixed-resistance stations.

Cardio and resistance equipment is digitally connected, enabling users to plan, track and record their workouts.

A new piece of equipment, called a Skill Mill, has also been installed.

It can be used for training in power, speed, stamina and agility - the first Glasgow Club gym to have one.

Glasgow City Council leader Frank McAveety, who was at the venue to welcome its first customer, said: "Our Glasgow Club team has been working around the clock to have these top of the range facilities ready, and what a job they've done.

"The place is looking fantastic and members have been flocking here all morning, trying out the classes and new gym equipment for themselves.

"Kelvin Hall has been at the heart of Glasgow's sporting history over the years and it's fitting that it now hosts the biggest and best-equipped gym in the city."

Mr McAveety added: "Today marks the reopening of the first part of this fantastic venue and I hope Glaswegians will take real ownership of their newest public facility."

Yvonne Greenlees, Glasgow Club's area manager for Kelvin Hall, said: "Everyone in the Kelvin Hall team has been looking forward to today - the day when we can finally open our doors to our members and let them see these amazing facilities.

"We are so excited to welcome customers and we're here to help them get acquainted with the new venue and answer any questions they might have."
