Sectarian graffiti has been daubed outside a Catholic private school.

The slur is believed to have been sprayed on the wall of St Aloysius' College in Glasgow city centre over the weekend.

The graffiti, which said "the famine's over! It's time to go home", was reported to police on Sunday at around 9pm.

An investigation has now been launched and officers said the incident was being treated as a hate crime. The spray paint has now been removed.

A spokeswoman for Police Scotland said: "Around 9pm on Sunday, August 21, police received a report of a vandalism outside a school on Hill Street, Glasgow.

"The incident is being treated as a hate crime and inquiries are ongoing."

A statement from St Aloysius' College said: "Graffiti was discovered on the Dalhousie Street side of the main building on the morning of Monday, August 22, following the weekend.

"The matter was reported to police and enquiries are ongoing. The graffiti has now been removed."
