A woman is fighting for life after her car ploughed into a lamppost and burst into flames.

The one-vehicle smash happened at a roundabout near Hunterston Power Station in Ayrshire in the early hours of Tuesday.

Police and fire and ambulance crews attended the scene and the woman was pulled from the car before being taken to hospital for treatment, where staff described her condition as critical.

The A78 Fairlie to Largs road was closed and diversions put in place.

A spokeswoman for Police Scotland said: "Around 5.50am on Tuesday police received a report of a one vehicle crash on the A78 Fairlie to Largs road at the Hunterston roundabout.

"A car had collided with a lamppost. One woman was taken by ambulance to Crosshouse Hospital in Kilmarnock for treatment to serious injuries.

"Medical staff describe her condition as serious. Diversions remain in place at the scene."
