A 64-year-old man was attacked in the street after approaching a gang of youths causing trouble at 4am.

The victim spoke to the group after hearing a disturbance in the early hours of Tuesday outside his home in Rutherglen, South Lanarkshire.

One of the youngsters attacked him as he approached the gang in Western Avenue and suffered a facial injury. He was taken to the Queen Elizabeth University Hospital for treatment and then later released.

Police have now launched a probe into the assault and are appealing for any witnesses to come forward.

The suspect is described as white, 16-20 years of age, 5ft 8in tall and of slim build with short brown hair. He was wearing a light-coloured top.

Detective constable Leane Holmes said: "This was a totally unprovoked attack on this man, and I would urge anyone who witnessed the attack, or has information on the young man responsible to contact us as a matter of urgency.

"Enquiries have been carried out in the local area, and officers are studying CCTV footage to identify the suspect and I would ask anyone with information that may assist our investigation to contact us through 101."
