Celtic's Leigh Griffiths has paid tribute to a young footballer who died after collapsing at a training session.

Kieran McDade, 13, suffered a cardiac arrest during a warm-up at Dunbeth Park in Coatbridge, North Lanarkshire, last Thursday. He died in hospital on Friday.

After scoring against Aberdeen on Saturday, Griffiths held up a top with "RIP Kieran" and the number 13 on it.

Earlier, the striker had said he would be meeting with Kieran's family before the SPFL match at Celtic Park.

Kieran, who played for Dunbeth Football Club's 2003 team, went into a coma after losing consciousness at the training session. He was transferred to the Royal Hospital for Children at Queen Elizabeth University Hospital in Glasgow.

On Friday, the club announced that the teenager had passed away earlier that day, paying tribute to the "happy go lucky" pupil from St Margaret's High School in Airdrie.

A crowdfunding appeal to assist the McDade family raised more than £10,000 in 24 hours.

His sister Amy also said that Kieran "saved two people's lives" by donating some of his organs following his death.

Dunbeth FC club secretary Martin Holmes told STV News earlier: "It was at training last Thursday. It had just started, the boys were doing their warm-up. They had just started to do small runs, around 50 yards, when Kieran complained about being breathless.

"He sat down and was taking on water when things just escalated from there. An ambulance was called and the coaching staff did what they could, getting Kieran into the recovery position.

"The ambulance arrived very quickly but he had stopped breathing by that point.

"Then last night we heard from the hospital there was nothing more they could do for him. This is just beyond comprehension. It has been horrendous for everyone."
