A student has been bombarded with sexually explicit text messages after going for an interview for a job she saw advertised online.

The 21-year-old woman saw the advert for a cleaning job on Gumtree last week and revealed that after showing an interest she was sent a number of messages.

The student from Johnstone in Renfrewshire, who asked not to be named, went to the man's flat in the south side of Glasgow for an interview after replying to the advert.

When she arrived at his home in Hillpark he showed her around and explained what she would be doing before things began to get "weird" and "creepy" when he asked for a massage.

The woman left but was then inundated with texts from the elderly man, known only as David, offering to pay for sex. She has reported the incident to police who say they are now investigating.

She told STV News: "I saw an advert for a job on Gumtree for a cleaner so I applied for it. It was an old guy. I thought he just needed some help around the house so I thought everything would be fine and thought no more of it.

"Then I went for an interview at his flat and that's when things started to be weird. He explained what I'd be doing then kept on asking and insisting that I give him a massage.

"I said it made me feel really awkward and didn't want to do it so he left it at that.

She added: "I'm quite naive but my partner noticed that he kept touching himself when we were there.

"When we left I got loads of really creepy text messages from him asking for sexual things. I got a fright.

"Luckily I brought my partner with me or who knows what could have happened. It could have been any young girl."

A Police Scotland spokeswoman said: "We have received a report into the incident and enquiries are ongoing."

A Gumtree spokeswoman said: "Millions of people use Gumtree every day and the vast majority have a safe and successful experience.

"We're committed to keeping our site as safe as possible. We always recommend that users communicate with each other through our messaging service rather than with texts and emails outside of our platform, to protect personal details.

"Also, our safety advice on our platform is to always check the person offering the job and company is real, and going along to any face to face meetings with a friend is always recommended.

"Should a Gumtree user experience harassment, such as in this case, we ask that they contact us immediately and notify the police, who we also work with very closely."
