Police marksmen were forced to shoot a vehicle's tyres during a police chase.

Officers were involved in a major intelligence-led operation in the north of Glasgow on Friday morning when the incident happened.

The operation took place at around 10.55am in the Robroyston area of the city and armed police a number of rounds were fired in order to blow out the tyres of a vehicle they were chasing.

No one was injured and police said they used the tactic to "reduce any potential wider impact to the public and to maximise their safety".

An investigation is continuing. STV News understands the probe is in relation to organised crime.

A force spokeswoman said: "Police Scotland Officers carried out an intelligence-led operation in the Robroyston area of Glasgow.

"As part of the operation, vehicle tyre deflation rounds were discharged directly into vehicle tyres.

"This is a recognised and practised tactic which is used specifically to disable a vehicle and was deployed in order to reduce any potential wider impact to the public and to maximise their safety.

"As a result, and in line with the routine procedure, this incident will be referred to PIRC for review.

"Enquiries are continuing at this time. No one was injured or hurt as part of the operation."

A spokesman for the Police Investigations and Review Commissioner (Pirc) said incidents involving firearms must be referred for independent investigation.

He said: "Police Scotland has notified Pirc of an incident in Robroyston, Glasgow, on September 30, where officers fired tyre deflation rounds (TDR) at a vehicle as part of an ongoing police operation.

"The Pirc will assess the circumstances of the police use of TDRs before determining whether there is a need to investigate further."
