A 20-year-old car passenger has died following a road crash in North Ayrshire.

The woman was taken to Inverclyde Royal Hospital where she was treated for serious injuries. She died later on Wednesday evening.

The incident happened around 8.35am on Wednesday on the A760 near Largs.

The Seat Ibiza was travelling westward when it left the road, mounted a grass verge close to Blair Park Farm and collided with a tree.

The 21-year-old woman driving the car was taken to hospital and later released after being treated for minor injuries.

Police have launched an investigation into the crash and are keen to speak to any witnesses.

A number of drivers stopped at the scene to assist, and any who have not yet spoken to police are also urged to come forward.

Sergeant Ian Thornton said: "Enquiries are ongoing into the circumstances surrounding this collision and I would ask anyone who may have witnessed the collision or the grey Seat Ibiza being driven on the A760, to contact the Divisional Road Policing Unit at Irvine via the police non-emergency number 101."
