A woman who died when the car she was travelling in left the road and hit a tree has been named.

Ashley King, 20, of Kilbirnie, North Ayrshire, was taken to Inverclyde Royal Hospital after the incident near Largs on Wednesday morning but died that evening.

Ms King's uncle Mark Bell led tributes to her on Facebook. He urged friends to "rally round and support" Ms King's family, before stating: "Goodnight Ashley, the fire in our hearts burns low, but your flame is now eternal."

The car's driver, a 21-year-old, was also taken to the same hospital where she was treated for minor injuries, after the collision at 8.35am on Wednesday.

The silver Seat Ibiza in which Ms King was travelling was heading west on the A760 when it left the road and mounted a grass verge close to Blair Park Farm before colliding with a tree.

An investigation into the crash is ongoing and police and are keen to speak to any witnesses.

A number of drivers stopped at the scene to assist and anyone who has not yet spoken to officers is urged to come forward.

Sergeant Ian Thornton said: "Enquiries are ongoing into the circumstances surrounding this collision and I would ask anyone who may have witnessed the collision or the grey Seat Ibiza being driven on the A760 to contact the Divisional Road Policing Unit at Irvine via the police non-emergency number 101."
