Residents in the south west of Scotland are being warned to protect their homes amid flood warnings.

An amber flood alert is in place for Dumfries and Galloway, issued by the Scottish Environment Protection Agency (Sepa).

A combination of high tides and prevailing winds means flooding from the sea is expected to affect low lying land, roads and properties along the coastline in the inner and outer Wigtown Bay area.

STV weather presenter Jo Farrow said: "It's a combination of high tides and brisk southerly winds pushing extra water against the coast of south west Scotland from the Solway Firth, especially for Inner Wigtown Bay.

"As the winds turn more to the south west today the threat of coastal flooding will ease."

A Sepa spokesperson said: "Any impacts will be confined to around the time of high tides on Sunday midday, Sunday night and Monday.

"The action of strong south easterly winds and waves will increase the impact of the high tides around midday on Sunday for communities in Wigtown Bay and Kirkcudbright Bay.

"Remain vigilant and remember, it is your responsibility to take actions which help protect yourself and your property."

Heavy rain has also caused travel chaos on the roads and motorists have been urged to take care.

Police were alerted to two minor crashes on the M74 on Monday morning.

A spokesperson for Police Scotland said: "Motorists are urged to take care on the roads for excessive rain water, particularly on the M74 around the Moffat area."
