An axe-wielding robber threatened staff at a Paisley newsagent before fleeing with around £200 from the till.

The "frightening" robbery took place at the Family Shopper in Causeyside Street at 8.10pm on Sunday.

The robber was assisted by another man who held the door open for him as he made his getaway with a three-figure sum of money.

Both men ran off towards the Gordon Street before being lost to sight.

The robber is described as in his early 20s, around 5ft 8in with dark brown hair. He was wearing a black body warmer with a grey hood over a green pilot jacket and dark grey jogging bottoms.

His accomplice was around 6ft and wore dark clothing with the hood up.

Parvinder Oujla, 58, who has run the store for two years, said it was the worst attack in his 36 years of working behind the counter.

Mr Oujla said: "I'm relieved that no one was injured because of this man. You can replace money but you cannot replace a body.

"I've been working in shops since 1980 and this is the worst robbery I've seen in that time. I've seen robberies but never that dangerous and never as much money as that.

"The police will hopefully catch those responsible."

Detective constable Raymond Brownlow from Paisley CID said: "Thankfully nobody was injured during this incident but it was still very frightening for those in the store at the time.

"I would like to speak to anyone who may have seen two men matching these descriptions in the surrounding area last night.

"Anyone with information is asked to contact officers at Paisley CID via 101 or alternatively you can call Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111 where details can be given in confidence."
