A man who died after his car crashed into a tree has been named by police.

Lee Gilchrist, 31, from Ayr, was taken to hospital after his Ford Kuga left the road and collided with a tree on the A77 in South Ayrshire on Sunday night.

Mr Gilchrist died from his injuries after the crash at the Dutch House Roundabout, near Monkton, at around 11.20pm.

No one else was injured in the crash and police have launched an investigation to establish what happened.

Mr Gilchrist's family released an image through the police of him with his 11-year-old son Lewis and six-year-old daughter Emilee.

A statement from Police Scotland said: "With reference to our previous release confirming the death of a 31-year-old man following a road crash on the A77 near Monkton in Ayrshire on Sunday, October 16, 2016.

"The deceased can be named as Lee Gilchrist from Ayr. Enquiries into establishing the circumstances of the incident are continuing.

"Anyone with any information is asked to contact road policing officers at Irvine Police Office on 101."
