Fans involved in disorder at Sunday's Old Firm match will be arrested in the stadium, police have warned.

Rangers and Celtic will meet at the weekend for the second time in just over a month as they face each other in the League Cup semi-final at Hampden.

A major policing operation will tackle any trouble and the match commander has issued a strong warning to supporters ahead of the match.

It is understood there will be a more visible presence among officers within the stadium.

Police Scotland's well-established policing tactic for football matches is to target those involved in trouble after the game rather than in the stadium.

The senior officer in charge of the clash has vowed his officers will proactively target the "badly-behaved minority intent on tarnishing matches", however, and will make arrests in the stadium where necessary.

He said "genuine" fans are not willing to put up with the behaviour of a minority of fans "any longer".

Chief superintendent Brian McInulty said: "Officers will take a more robust and proactive approach to the match to actively tackle those involved in criminal behaviour or behaviour that puts the safety of others at risk, before they do it.

"Our policing approach is about early intervention, prevention and engagement.

"This means that supporters should expect to see more officers proactively targeting the small amount of people intent on drinking to excess, behaving badly or being involved in offensive conduct such as disorder, antisocial behaviour, vandalism or hate crime.

"Genuine fans are not willing to put up with this any longer and neither is the police. It's unacceptable and it has to stop."

The senior officer added: "Our objective is to deliver a peaceful, safe event.

"Officers have been planning for this event since the draw was made and a significant amount of resources go into policing these sporting events, and we want people to come to the stadium over the two days and enjoy a good game of football. These games shouldn't be remembered for the wrong reasons.

"This is a great weekend of football to be enjoyed by everyone and we intend to work together with our partners to ensure it passes safely and with minimum disorder."
