Two children are in a serious condition after a two-car crash in Ayrshire.

An eight-year-old girl and a four-year-old boy were taken to the Queen Elizabeth University Hospital after a crash between a Black Chevrolet Spark and a Red Vauxhall Corsa on Thursday afternoon.

The children, who were passengers in the Corsa, are said to be in a serious condition after the incident.

A 28-year-old woman who was driving the car is described as being in a stable condition.

The crash happened on the B780 Dalry to Kilbirnie road near its junction with the B784 at around 2.30pm.

A 66-year-old woman who was driving the Chevrolet and her passenger, a 32-year-old man, were both taken to Crosshouse Hospital by ambulance with minor injuries.

The B780 has been closed to allow for police enquiries and local diversions remain in place.

Police are appealing for any information which may help to establish the circumstances of the crash.
