The body of a woman has been found at a flat as police launch a probe into her unexplained death.

Officers were called to the property in Dumbarton, West Dunbartonshire, on Thursday afternoon where they made the discovery.

They entered the flat on Bellsmyre at 1.40pm and forensic officers spent hours inside while the area remained sealed off outside.

Detectives say they are currently treating the death as unexplained and a post mortem will take place. The woman has yet to be identified.

A spokeswoman for Police Scotland said: "Around 1.40pm on Thursday, police discovered the body of a woman within a property in Bellsmyre Avenue, Dumbarton.

"A post mortem examination will take place in due course to establish the exact cause of death which officers are treating as unexplained at this time.

"A report will be submitted to the procurator fiscal."
