A community Men's Shed has been ransacked by vandals who scrawled far-right graffiti on its walls.

The looters took around £5000 worth of tools from the facility in the Gorbals area of Glasgow before covering it with right-wing and anti-police slogans including a swastika and a sign which read "free Tommy Robinson".

Other statements including "Big Jock Knew" and "ACAB" were also sprayed on to the walls in brown and orange paint.

The stolen items included a TIG welder, a metal cut off saw, a Dewalt chop saw, an AEG plunge saw, a Hitachi cordless gun and several hand tools.

The Gorbals Men's Shed is a recently formed, community led project utilising the Men's Shed model to engage local men who have become isolated or marginalised within the community.

It offers the opportunity for participants to use their existing abilities to pursue practical hobbies and crafts, as well as working alongside one another to develop new skills.

Organisers said the Men's Shed is a safe, friendly space for men to meet and interact with one another whilst undertaking projects that are of benefit to individuals, groups and the wider community.

It was launched in the Gorbals as a social space for men to gather away from pubs in a bid to improve issues around mental and physical health.

Many health benefits have already been identified to be gained from attending a local Men's Shed, from increasing physical fitness by walking from home to the Shed, becoming actively engaging in whatever is going on or simply combating loneliness by spending time with like minded people.

Originating in Australia the idea is for the shed to give men places to meet in a place without alcohol and pursue hobbies, repair machinery and tell jokes.

A spokesman for the group said: "It is sad that this has happened but it won't be holding us back from any activities we have planned."

Police have been contacted regarding the break-in and are now investigating the incident.

Anyone with any information or who might have witnessed anything suspicious near the shed between Thursday night and Sunday should contact officers on 101.

And anyone with any tools or other relevant items they are able to donate or lend to Gorbals Men's Shed should contact the group directly on their Twitter account.
