A young seal pup has been rescued after being found stranded on a beach.

A concerned member of the public spotted the pup on the shore of Tayvallich while out on a walk.

The young seal has been named Alex by the wildlife team at the Scottish SPCA rescue centre in Alloa.

Centre manager, Colin Seddon, said Alex is doing well and is being fed a diet of liquidised fish through a syringe and tube.

He will be moved onto solid fish and have his weight monitored, and will be released back into the wild when he is a bit older.

Inspector Yvonne Inglis said: "Every year we care for over 100 seal pups rescued from all over Scotland.

"Seal rescues this far north can be particularly difficult as so many factors come in to play, including securing transport.

"I was exceptionally grateful to receive support from Mark from Marine Concern, and his daughter Tierney, who helped me ensure Alex had enough fluids before taking on the journey to our centre."

Mark Carter from Marine Concern said that if you find a stranded or abandoned seal you should get help, keep away and observe, as seals can bite and carry pathogens that may be bad for dogs and humans.

He said: "Thanks to the folk in Tayvallich who took the correct action when finding a potentially stranded/abandoned seal, they tracked down help, kept away and observed.

"Seals can bite; they can carry pathogens, which may adversely affect dogs and humans.

"The common seal, European harbour seal and the grey seal are under increasing pressure from a variety of different problems man-made and natural, many seal pups fail to see adulthood."
