A man has been found guilty of the "horrendous" rape of a young woman in an Edinburgh park.

Steven Davidson was found guilty at the High Court in Edinburgh of attacking a 19-year-old woman in the Meadows.

The young woman had been making her way home from a party in Niddry Street along the park's Jawbone Walk when Davidson attacked her and forced her to the ground in the morning of Saturday, November 15, 2014.

She was sexually assaulted before Davidson ran off towards the Summerhall area. She told the trial she had been choked before falling unconscious.

A major investigation was launched, which led to 24-year-old Davidson's arrest. He will be sentenced in February.

Detective chief inspector Alwyn Bell from the Edinburgh Public Protection Unit said: "The despicable acts carried out by Steven Davidson brought tremendous distress to his victim.

"This was a horrendous ordeal for anyone to go through and I hope the judgment passed down by the court today brings some sense of closure to the woman and her family.

"Offences of a sexual nature are among the most abhorrent crimes that can be carried out on someone and we treat all such reports with the utmost seriousness.

"Police Scotland is committed to thoroughly investigating all reports of sexual offences irrespective of when they are carried out.

"I want to stress that there is no time limit for reporting crime, particularly those of a sexual nature, and we work closely with all partner agencies to ensure people receive the support they need, when they need it."
